Rasas – Kandyan Dance

Kandyan Dance is a ritual-dance custom that only evolved into a performance art in the 20th century. Its origin can be traced back again to pre-Buddhist moments, and since it was preserved through oral tradition, it is quite obvious that the ritual theatre, like all living art forms, offers been changing through the years: discarding some components and absorbing others, progressing and adapting. It was only in the 1930s, with the emergence of Chitrasena, a virtuoso in the traditional dance forms of Sri Lanka and his innovative work in getting the dance to the stage, that this ancient art form was given new life. Chitrasena, determined to keep the historic dance forms alive in a world that was rapidly changing, adapted and refined it to match the modern stage.

The most well-known of Kandyan dances, Ves, is derived from these ritual dances and features elaborate costumes and headgear that are considered to be sacred. Performed only by men originally, Ves was adapted for feminine dancers in the 20th century.

Established in the 1940s the Chitrasena Dance Firm is definitely Sri Lanka’s oldest & most prestigious dance company. Reputed for being the pioneers and revolutionists in the dance sphere in Sri Lanka – the business continues to experiment without compromise and pursues their objective of preserving the original dance forms while innovating within them.

Rasas – Lakhaon Kaol

Lakhaon Kaol is one of Cambodia’s oldest classical dance forms. Stone inscriptions from the tenth century reveal the form was originally called Phea Ny – produced from Sanskrit and meaning to inform or recite a tale. Phea Ny was performed by male dancers and musicians and shares this characteristic exclusively, amongst others, with the present-day Lakhaon Kaol. All performers are masked except for those taking female roles.

Cambodians respect Lakhaon Kaol while a sacred talent with overtones of a spiritual ritual. Yet, regardless of its sacred character, Lakhaon Kaol also serves as entertainment at particular occasions within families, at monasteries and to welcome visitors to a village. It offers only one narrative: the tale of Reamker, the Cambodian version of the Hindu Ramayana epic which came to Cambodia in the sixth century.

Performances of Lakhaon Kaol are accompanied by the Pin Paet ensemble, the traditional Cambodian classical orchestra. The dance was typically performed around enough time of Khmer New Calendar year to purge the city of bad omens and as an entreaty to the gods to bring villagers pleasure and fertility.

Amrita Performing Arts is an International NGO located in Phnom Penh, committed to creating Cambodian contemporary theater and dance, responding to the creative drive of a young generation of performers passionately focused on ushering their country’s ancient executing arts heritage into the future. Founded in 2003 with a mission to help revive and preserve the wide spectral range of Cambodia’s traditional carrying out arts, the ongoing company has evolved to focus more on modern creativeness in theater and dance. Lee Kuan Yew Exhibition free1

For: Family

To commemorate the Life and work of our founding father, Lee Kuan Yew, The National Museum of Singapore has extended its exhibition on Mr Lee Kuan Yew till May 24.

This memorial exhibition chronicles the life and political career of Singapore’s first Prime Minister and founding father Lee Kuan Yew. It also highlights the ideals and convictions that shaped Mr Lee and his generation of leaders.

Through a selection of photographic images and audiovisual recordings, as well as artefacts from the National Collection, the exhibition begins with Mr Lee’s formative years as a law student at Cambridge and his early involvement in the anti-colonial struggle.

It also traces his political career from the formation of the People’s Action Party, through his Prime Ministership, to his final years of service as Senior Minister and Minister Mentor. Mr Lee’s political biography is inextricably linked to Singapore’s own journey from British colony to merger with Malaysia to Separation and independence.

This exhibition chronicles that journey and pays tribute to his contributions. This exhibition will enable visitors to remember and reflect on the solid foundation that he built for Singapore.

Da Vinci: Shaping the Future

For: Arts, Family

Original masterpieces from one of the world’s most celebrated geniuses, Leonardo da Vinci, is now shown in Southeast Asia for the first time in this landmark exhibition at ArtScience Museum™.

Da Vinci: Shaping the Future is a journey through the work and legacy of the most celebrated artist and scientist of all time, Leonardo da Vinci. Presenting original masterpieces by da Vinci for the first time in Southeast Asia, the exhibition focuses on the Codex Atlanticus, da Vinci’s largest notebook.

Featuring groundbreaking designs, stunning artistic sketches and pioneering technological innovations, the Codex Atlanticus is the basis for an exploration of five key areas of da Vinci’s mastery: mathematics, natural sciences, architecture, technology, and music.  Original paintings by the School of da Vinci are presented in the centre of the exhibition, while the original pages of the Codex Atlanticus are displayed at the end.  Interwoven throughout the journey are five contemporary art installations, including three new commissions, which reveal how da Vinci’s ideas and thinking remains strikingly resonant today.

Combining his original works, with innovative contemporary design, interactive exhibits, technology, film and contemporary art, the exhibition presents rich insights into da Vinci’s art, science, technology and his fascination with nature.  As the pioneer of what has become known as systemic thinking, da Vinci’s approach to interweave connections among different disciplines, mark him out as a figure centuries ahead of his time.  Although he was born more than 500 years ago, da Vinci’s genius, creativity, and unique approach continue to inspire and shape the future we live in.

Urban Art

For: Arts, Family

With Urban Art, Opera Gallery intends to bridge the gap between nature and industry by presenting artworks with a fusion of both creativity and the essence of city life. This exhibition aims to demonstrate how both of these elements are able to adapt and bind to each other, creating exquisite, transcendental gems of the 21st century that suit both urban and suburban locations.

As art encroaches back into urban dwellings, we are presented with an artificial reimagining of nature. Metal structures stimulate organic life forms; felled wood is reanimated, creating mythical beats that surge with life. As these organic and man-made concepts collide, they are brought to life in a cutting-edge display.
